Crystal Starr Blends Music, Fashion, Dance, And Art In Music Video For ‘Part Time Lover’

Crystal Starr is a vocal powerhouse whose style is inspired by 80s radio legends, while bringing her own take to make it totally contemporary. New single, ‘Part Time Lover’, is an instant earworm that will leave you wanting more.

Crystal started her musical career singing backing vocals and opening for the likes of Ariana Grande, Jessica Simpson, and Yolanda Adams, but now it’s her time to shine in the spotlight with her own original music.

Following a time performing on Broadway, Crystal Starr is now living in LA, and takes a deeply personal approach to the creative process of her music. She writes, records, and produces both sound and visuals, with the support of close friends and family, and the dedication is certainly paying off, with Rolling Stone recently praising her approach to her craft.

Her new track, ‘Part Time Lover’, was produced alongside Crystal’s longtime collaborator, Danny Mills, and it’s fully laden with 80s glamour. There’s shimmering synths, crisply percussive flairs, and guitar riffs that are as infectious as Crystal’s vocals, which float above the melody with the merest hint of echo.

The track came about following a conversation she had with a friend, and it examines how complex emotional unavailability seems to be looking from an outside perspective. Crystal is the voice of reason, stepping in to give her advice to those who are caught up in the cycle of chasing their uncommitted lover, and she asks if they are truly fulfilled, because, “true love shouldn’t feel one sided”.

The music video manages to capture the 80s vibe of the song, despite not being a high budget production. Spellbinding in its blend of music, fashion, dance, and art, ‘Part Time Lover’ was entirely self-directed and produced, and shot with the help of Crystal’s family in a Los Angeles loft, capturing the classic MTV feel from back in the day.

Making good use of light – both natural and artificial – and shadow, the music video for ‘Part Time Lover’ was inspired by Prince’s clip for ‘Diamonds and Pearls’, and it channels its dreamy atmosphere as Crystal is shown dancing alongside Sebastian “Bash” Johnson. Together their performance is mesmerising, and they manage to perfectly capture the longing and urgency of the song – despite not having a professional production team.
