Saturday, March 29 brought the return of Killswitch Engage to the Omaha metro area as they played The Astro in La Vista, NE. They brought along with them three heavy bands, all from the great state of Texas, to support them. The heavy music enthusiasts showed up in droves for this killer night of live music.

Frozen Soul from Dallas kicked things off for the night. This was my second time seeing these guys after seeing them open up for Amon Amarth last year. It was another amazing set to get the crowd pumping for the night. They are leading the charge for this new generation of death metal bands. The mosh pit was ready by the end of their set. I still get a kick out of lead vocalist Chad Green when he describes their songs on stage like “Godzilla and his big nutsack” and “caveman/Neanderthal riffs”. Overall, solid opening set from Frozen Soul. I hope we get some new material from them very soon.

Fit For a King from Tyler, TX was next on the bill. This was also my second time seeing them, having seen them open up for I Prevail in 2022. It was another solid set from this four-piece. They had such a high energy to get the crowd surfers going for the night. I’m always impressed with bassist Ryan O’Leary bass spins. That is one strong guitar strap. The genre of metalcore is in good hands with Fit for a King. Be on the lookout for a new album from them coming later this year.

Kublai Khan from Sherman, TX was the direct support of the night. I have never seen so many people wear the merchandise of an opener before, and that’s what happened this night. I can confirm the hype is real, and these guys are next level. It is insane how much these guys have leveled up from playing the Lookout Lounge (RIP) to opening one of the biggest metalcore bands out there. I mean this positively, this band has Stone Cold Steve Austin-energy, just taking names and kicking ass, Texas style. Hardcore music has been becoming a bigger genre, with bands like Kublai Khan leading the charge. Check out their latest album that came out last year, Exhibition of Prowess.

Finally, the crowd was ready for Killswitch Engage. I will admit, I was pretty bummed that they skipped Nebraska on the last album touring cycle, so when I heard they were coming back here for the kick-off for their next album, all was forgiven. I have been seeing this band live since 2013, my fifth time, and am quite impressed that they still have the same lineup of guys when I first saw them. You can’t say that for so many bands. That is what makes Killswitch Engage one of the best live bands. They know what they do and have fun doing it. They had these back risers that you can perform on, and it reminded me of Iron Maiden, but on a smaller scale. The crowd sounded pretty loud in the best way, singing along to every chorus. I’m so glad Killswitch Engage are still performing at the level when I first saw them live in 2013. Go check out their latest album that just came out, This Consequence. Hopefully it doesn’t take eight years for them to come back to Nebraska.
